Summer workshop plain air relief
I’m giving a 6 day workshop in plain air relief.
Each day will start with
a short talk about principles and techniques, followed by a quick
demonstration. Get the opportunity to do a guided session of sculpting a plain
air relief at a beautiful location in Florence!

Program
Lecture on relief basics, and basic sculpture
principles as applicable to relief. Demo of a block-in and starting practices.
Additive or Subtractive methodologies explained. Explanation of notes and line
quality in relief block-in.
Students start their block in.
Lecture on chromatic and value keying of the
relief. Demo of taking a drawn in clay block in into value key and organizing
relief based on depths, edges, textures and overlaps.
Students take their drawing in clay into relief form
and start working with values.
July 14-15
Introduction to finishing a relief,
relative balance of resolving elements to maintain focus and
atmosphere.
Students resolve their reliefs to finished state.
Quick lecture and demo on prepping relief for
firing or casting.
Lecture on arrangement of drawing in clay during block
in stage. Composition and selective priorities in block in drawing stages.
Students proceed with the second block in drawing,
trying to organize their drawing with priorities for later stages.
July 21-22
Demo of different keying methods. Base vs Low vs High
relief and how to keep relief in a specific range and key accordingly. And
effects of light, and patina on the final piece.
Students select one of the ranges of key, and key
relief in a specific range.
Quick demo on working in small details in clay and
architectural elements vs atmospheric, tricks and tips.
Students finish their second relief.
Final lecture on exercises to do for improving drawing
and sight in relief.
